The Summer Program is designed to give summer associates a realistic view of our firm, and we make every effort to expose them to the breadth of our practice, our collegial atmosphere, and our community. It is our goal to provide each summer associate with enough information to make an informed decision about joining HSE after graduation, and we invite our summer associates to participate in a variety of social events so that they may get to know our attorneys in a more casual setting and experience many of the attractions that the Rochester community has to offer.
Ongoing constructive feedback is a very important part of our Summer Program. To that end, each of our attorneys is encouraged to provide direct specific feedback at the end of each project, and each summer associate receives 5 formal reviews during the course of the summer. We want all of our summer associates to feel comfortable asking questions and expressing their individual needs. To facilitate this, each summer associate is assigned a mentor to help provide guidance and information. We seek individuals with the integrity, intellect, ambition and enthusiasm to make practicing with us a mutually enjoyable and rewarding experience. We extend offers only to those we believe have the potential to become partners. All hiring decisions are made without regard to age, race, sex, color, creed, religion, national origin, handicap, sexual orientation or marital status.
"The Summer Program at HSE provides law students with a unique opportunity to find his or her niche within the broad spectrum of legal fields. Rotations through each practice group allow students to experience firsthand what it would be like to be a lawyer in that field. Working through HSE's rotations I realized that I enjoyed practicing in fields that I had disliked in law school. Had HSE's summer program simply allowed me to work in the fields I enjoyed in law school, I would have never discovered my niche.”

"My summer experience at Harter Secrest & Emery was a blast! From the beginning I was asked to assist with real legal matters for real clients. I was given the respect and responsibility of any other professional in a pleasant, supportive, and welcoming environment. Throughout the summer there were many great social events; from softball to cooking class and everything in between. Even though the summer flew by, I was able to get to know my work companions both in and out of the office. I was also able to get out on my own and explore Rochester, which itself is a fun and welcoming place with tons to do. It was a great great experience!"
