HSE is committed to undertaking initiatives and participating in programs that promote educational growth and inspire youth of varied backgrounds to pursue careers in the legal profession. In support of that commitment, the Firm provides financial and mentoring resources to the following:

The Literacy for Life Program. HSE is a founding sponsor of Literacy for Life, a program of the Rochester City School District that brings volunteer professionals into elementary school classrooms to work with the children on their reading skills. As part of this program, the firm has also underwritten the purchase of books for the students.

The Academy of Law, Justice and Government. In 2002, HSE “adopted” the Law Academy at the School Without Walls in the Rochester City School District. Firm contributions to the students involved in this program include:
funding the purchase of legal dictionaries and statutory publications of New York State Penal and Criminal Procedure Law;
underwriting the Law Academy student production of a series of plays about legal principles at local elementary schools;
funding the tuition for three Law Academy students to attend the Boy Scouts’ Summer Law Enforcement Explorer Program;
helping fund the annual Law Academy trip to Boston;
awarding scholarships to Law Academy seniors to participate in a Senior Seminar through Monroe Community College;
providing community service stipends to five Law Academy students to volunteer for local not-for-profit and public sector organizations;
participating in an interactive torts lesson with one of the Law Academy classes;
hosting Law Academy students at the firm for a discussion with attorneys and other HSE professionals regarding employment opportunities in the legal field;
providing annual financial support to the LawPrep Summer Internship Program;
participating in a mentoring program for girls attending the Law Academy;
providing attorney coaches for mock trial teams; and
purchasing student-centered news periodicals.

Lawyers for Learning. Through the Monroe County Bar Association, lawyers, paralegals, and staff from HSE are encouraged to spend time each week mentoring elementary school students in the Rochester City School District. Some HSE legal professionals have continued to tutor the same students for several years following their graduation from elementary school.
