Harter Secrest & Emery LLP, a full-service business law firm with offices throughout New York, announced that it is expanding its Energy practice and has assumed the New York oil & gas energy law practice of John H. Heyer, Esq. of Olean, New York, who is retiring from the practice.

Heyer has been representing oil & gas exploration and production companies, among others, in private practice for nearly 50 years. He is Director Emeritus of the Independent Oil & Gas Association of New York (IOGANY), a Trustee of the Energy & Mineral Law Foundation and the author of the New York chapter of the American Association of Professional Landmen’s (AAPL) Nationwide Comparison of Oil & Gas Law.

“It has been a privilege to represent so many outstanding and dedicated clients in the energy industry over the years,” said Heyer. “I have the greatest respect and affection for my loyal clients and their can-do approach to the problems they encounter in their day to day operations. Energy is the life blood of our economy and I am glad to have been a part of this vital industry during periods of great change and challenges. I am confident that the industry will be well served by the outstanding lawyers at Harter Secrest & Emery.”

“John has established a strong reputation as both an industry thought leader and a trusted advisor. We are honored that he has entrusted Harter Secrest & Emery with the opportunity to carry on his work with his clients,” said Craig S. Wittlin, Harter Secrest & Emery Managing Partner. “Our firm’s expertise in the energy field, as well as our presence across New York State, positions us perfectly to provide John’s clients with the high level of service and counsel to which they are accustomed.”

Attorneys in the Harter Secrest & Emery Energy practice represent public and private clients on the full scope of issues and regulations facing energy-related projects and companies, including project finance and development, joint ventures, M&A, real estate acquisitions, supply agreements, taxation, and environmental permitting and regulations. The firm has extensive experience with energy development, and has been involved in all aspects of coal, natural gas, wind, hydroelectric, biomass, and other energy-generating facilities across New York.
